Adding A Creative Reverb: The Ministry of Hope

The Social Wing organized an extension lecture titled “Adding A Creative Reverb: The Ministry of Hope” on 1st August, 2025 in Papal Seminary Hall. Brothers from SVD sang the prayer song. Stephin Fredy from Second year theology delivered the Welcome Address. Fr. Nicolau D’ Costa SVD was the resource person. The session was enlightening and enriching. He motivated the audience to be creative in their ministry. He explained different practical aspects which would help us to be creative. He also threw light on the possible dangers in the life of creative persons. He connected the topic with the pericope from the Gospel according to Luke 10:1-11. The session was interesting and valuable.

 

Blood Donation Camp

JDSC Social Wing in association with St. Vincent De Paul Society of Christ the King Parish, Sainikwadi and in collaboration with Akshay Blood Centre, Hadapsar organised a blood donation camp at Christ the King Parish Hall on September 13, 2025. The camp began with a prayer led by Fr. Naveen Rebello SVD, Animator of JD Students' Council. Many students from Jnana Deepa and parishioners donated blood and made the camp meaningful.

 

Extension Lecture on Mathematics, Democracy and Social Justice

Jnana Deepa Students’ Council (JDSC) Social Wing organized an extension lecture titled “Mathematics, Democracy and Social Justice” on 31st October, 2025 from 6:15 pm to 7:30 pm in Neuner Hall, PG block. Brothers from La Verna Capuchin Theologate sang the prayer song. Bro. Pavan Kumar Sikakollu, Secretary of JDSC, delivered the Welcome Address. Fr. Dolichan Kollareth SJ, President of Jnana Deepa Pontifical Athenaeum, welcomed the Speaker with a bouquet. Bro. Jarvis D, coordinator of JDSC Social Wing, introduced the Speaker Dr. Maura B. Mast. She was the former Dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, an undergraduate liberal arts college which is part of Fordham University in New York City. Currently she is conducting research into international Catholic higher education during the 2025 – 2026 academic year.

The session was interesting and informative. Dr. Maura presented the importance of Mathematics in day to day life. She demonstrated that knowledge in mathematics is required to realise the truth in government budgets, voting, extent of per capita CO2 emissions of different economic category of countries etc. Thus, she connected mathematics with social justice and democracy. She also threw light on some historians and social activists who presented the importance of mathematics for social change. She emphasized that mathematics should be accessible to everyone and held that rather than understanding mathematics as computation, critical thinking and imagination of the students should be enhanced through mathematics classes. She addressed questions raised by audience in a meaningful manner. Her husband Jack was present on the occasion. He is a social worker. He gave some insights on how mathematics helps people to realise whether the welfare of people is met in a just manner.

 

Social Outreach Program

Jnana Deepa Students’ Council (JDSC) Social Wing organised a half-day social outreach program on 22nd November, 2025 to SNEHALAYA in Wagholi, an Institute for the Handicapped & Cerebral Palsied Children with Multiple Disabilities. 30 Students from Jnana Deepa Pontifical Athenaeum and Fr. Rohan, the youth in-charge of the Diocese of Pune took part in this outreach program. Students from Jnana Deepa reached Snehalaya by 9:00 am. They mingled with the differently abled students of Snehalaya through various activities like action song, games, dance, songs etc.
